Check Valves Prevent Water Hammer in Heating System

With national economy developing and living standard improving constantly in China, urban heating system has already replaced of household decentralized heating furnace. Currently, cities such as Beijing and Shenyang, are setting up large urban heating system. In the future, urban heating system will develop into large scale and complication. So, once water hammer happens, it has strong collapsing force and results in serious consequences. Nevertheless, necessary measures must be taken to reduce or prevent water hammer as far as possible.

Check valves play a key role in pipelines of heating system. Mounting position, structure and close curves of check valves have great influence on security and reliability of heating system. If check valves are used appropriately, the valves can prevent water hammer from happening. However, check valves are misused, the valves cannot protect heating equipments. The valves may produce large water hammer in pipelines of heating system.

In terms of transient motion of fluids, check valves are required to be opened or closed only under the situation when power is cut off. Moreover, flow conditions in pipelines of heating system have requirements on on-off velocity of valves. Inappropriate on-off velocity can result in pressure in pipelines rising or falling suddenly. When pressure rises to high enough, pipelines may be broken. For security of system, appropriate structure and close curves of check valves should be chosen to prevent water hammer.
